    Hallo zusammen,

    Hi, obsi,

Based on your descriptions, it seems me, you have some power problems.
Did you check the 5 Volt on the output on the regulator and on the Vcc pin of the controller?
The 25 sec delay seems, caused by some overheating (?) have you any metal plate on the regulator IC?
Another tipp is to look around the reset logic. On the board there is a reset buton, what happen if you push it? Measure the reset pin of the controller during the push and after...

Your question connected to the first message from the board, it will be write out after the init processes, immediatly, after the 4 yellow blinks. But it need a working RS232 interface.
You can check the conditions of this part, if you get out the controller, and make a temporaly short between the TX and the RX pin of the contoller shocket, and you try to sent to the board some characters. If you applay this test short, it need to echoing back your terminal input. After, if this check is successfull, can you wait something from the controller itself.
What is your setup at your gtkterm? my board send out the data with 19200 baud.
I think, whitout gps connection the firmware init message come out, but nothing more.
    t.janos

Ok, Ok, if you have the first switch on, check the soldering point on the board again, maybe better with a magnifier glass...
And hopefully you cheched the power without the IC-s on the power pins on the board, before switching it on.

I tried to understand the error situation following this logic:

For a minimal working situation of the controller need
    - 5 V power
    - clock signal (qvarz with the 2 small capacitors)
    - working reset logic, it means if it will switch on, the reset pin will go up to the power level with a little delay.
Ofcourse, if you want to see something "meaningfull", it need a working program write in it...
    -------------------

Based on the circuit diagram in the last TOA...pdf dokumentation, the 3 LED-s connected to the atmega controller in this order:
    PPS - pin 20
    GPS - pin 19
    SIG - pin 18

Obsi described the error situation in such a way (in google translate):
    ------------

After power is true (switch on), however, so that only the red LED lights up first on the evaluation board.
After about 25 seconds then all four LEDs light up. (do not blink four times as described)
    -------------
If I understand, the 3 leds can light up, if the controller pins go down to the GND level. From this my first tipp was the power, or reset problem:
If he switch it on, start the power, but the controller dont start to working because the reset or clock problem, but the 3 pins are in HIGH state.
It is interesting fakt, that 25 sec later all the 3 leds go up. It means, the power remain near (?) 5V, but all the 3 controller pins go down.
I have the feeling, it is not a software problem, but more fundamentals (hw).

"Accidentally" I have an empty controller (in factory default state), and I made a probe test with it, imitate the Obsi-situation:
I pluged it in the board, whitout connected gps...
The produced situation: the power led go up, but not any others, it means, the controller "working" in the meaning of hardware level, and the pins, switching the leds ,remains in HIGH state.
My board, it is shure, has correct reset and clock signal, but in this test hasnot any software.

From this it seems me, it has chance, that the programing of the software (fuses?) has problem...

Thanks to all for their ideas.

    First the bad thing:
    Problem still exists !

Here some more infos / updates and results of some tests already done.

A.) My Hardware / Jumper settings
    =================================
I've got the PCBs CPU, Quarz and the A/D from Egon Wanke - the rest from reichelt and conrad.
I use an EM-406A as GPS receiver.
The jumper settings are like on Figure 24 (Page 25 in TOA_Blitzortung.pdf) except following:
JP4/1 and JP4/2 are not shorted (no jumper is set on JP4) ==> Board should run on 4800,8,N,1

    B.) Done following Tests:
    =========================

    1.) Voltage regulator 7805
    ---------------------------
==> get 5,02 V DC on my Multimeter
==> replaced my small wall plug transformer with a stabilised (max. 5 Amp) power supply.

    2.) GPS receiver / MAX232
    -------------------------
Checking the GPS receiver (set jumpers JP1/1 and JP1/2 like Figure 27 - right picture)
    Launching "gtkterm --speed 4800"

    3.) Communication Board <-> PC
    --------------------------------------
Removed the GPS device and CPU
    Launched gtkterm
    a.)
Played with a grounded cable on pin 15 of the CPU
==> got some characters on the PC
    b.)
Shorten Pin 15 of the CPU and Pin 3 of GPS device.
Type something within gtkterm ==> is echoed
    MAX232 seems to work correct.

    4.) Reset button
    ----------------
When all 4 leds are light up and I press the reset button then all starts from beginning
    (seems reset key works)

    5.) Test button
    -------------
    Nothing happens

    My Questions:

Is the source of the firmware available ?
    Any more ideas ?

    Dear Obsi,
my last tipp is to try your board with a "shure" working controller...
If you have tool to programming it, the firmaware can download from the password protected part of the Blitzortung web page from here:
    Services -> Miscelaneous.
If you dont have password (yet) from Egon, send me a mail to this address, (hg5apz at gmail com) and I send back to you the firmware.
If you havenot programming tool, I send to you my "spare" controller with the choosed firmware.

Rereading your test series, here are some more notes:

If your controller has hw error inside, (for example dont working memory cells in flash inside), you dont hope success to reprograming it.

    you said:
    1.) Voltage regulator 7805
    ---------------------------
==> get 5,02 V DC on my Multimeter
==> replaced my small wall plug transformer with a stabilised (max. 5 Amp) power supply.
How can interpret this? Do you drive the board with this stab power unit "after the 7805 stab", or
drive with this stab 5 Volt from the independent unit the 7805 input?
In the last case the 7805 dont able to make/keep the 5 Volt on its output.
    t.janos

By the way, now I measured the the input voltage/current from my wall plug unit, it is 14 V DC, and if the board is working, flowing on it 130 mA current. I think, 8-12 V input is enough for the 7805 to produce the correct power, without too much heat.

    ---------

Discussing with my collegue, come up another possible error:
If somehow was changed the values of the capacitors connected to the qvarz chrystall, the controller dont able to get correct/stable clock signal, maybe try to run, but not in a stable way...
The correct values around the qvarz are 15-22 pf and usually can change it with nf values...

    1.)
I replaced the wall plug only to be sure there is no problem with this small power supply (it was bought exacly for blitzortung PCB and never tested/used before).

    2.)
I power the PCB with choosen 12 V (wall plug brings about 14 V) so the output of 7805 is 5,02 V.

    3.)
    Checked the 15pF

    Hi, obsi,

I started to test the recently available firmware on my board.
Need to note, my board is an old version, PCB 4 ver 3
The proposed firmware version on the table on Miscellaneus page is 29B because my board run with 20 MHz clock.
I programmed it and it seems it working (I can say this after app. 2 hours running).

After this I started to deal with the ver 29a and 29A, which is propose to PCB 6 ver 6 or higher. Your case is 29a, with 19.660 MHz clock.
First of all, I note, that on Windows it is easy to mix the hex files, because this op system dont make differences between the 29a and 29A in the filename, If I wanted to save this two files, it said, it has such filename (!) From this point I use the filename instead of 29A the 29AA version, and so...

I programmed both the firmware version proposed to the new boards, the 29a and the 29AA. The test result more or less the same on my old board: the controller start to init, bliking the yellow led in 4 times, and come on the serial line some "garbages" (with minicom). I didnot wait meaningfull messages on it, because the clock freq, and the old board version.

So, I think this programmed controller working, I will send it to you on monday for test on your board, with the 29a version.
    best
    t.janos.

    Found the solution.

Checking the XTAL on the CPU with an oscilloscope I saw just some small flickering.
Validated the XTAL an my oszi with an other (was just a 8031 cpu board) evaluation board I saw a clear signal ==> my oszi is OK.
Changed the 19.6608 Mhz quarz with a 20 MHz (no 19.6608 was available) ==> the board was running.
Reinserted the 19.6608 ==> same behaviour as before.
I left the board connected for some hours and found out that after a while one led after the other turned off.

==> The quarz is broken and does not oszilate (maybe at 0.5 Hz) ==> The board was running extreamly slow !!

Changed the quarz to the 20 Mhz. (19.6608 not available)
No I have to reprogram the firmware with 20 MHz.

Thanks to all for your hints and ideas

    Stefan
