    Hallo,

    Serial_tracker.exe running on linux:
(I think, this issue isnot any problem to the majority of members here, but I hope, this notes help in the developing works)

Previously I checked the different versions of serial_tracker, are there running on linux under wine emulator or not. This previous versions running without any problems:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 64512 Aug 19 2010 serial_tracker2.50.exe
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 66048 Jul 19 2010 serial_tracker3.15.1.exe
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 64512 Aug 29 13:44 serial_tracker4.002.exe
Now I was courious again, the new version, 5.17, available now on the Miscellaneous page, able to run on my machines or not.
For this small test I used two different linux systems:

    1. CentOS 5.5
This is an "old fashion" linux, practically a readhat clone, I use it pemanently as a root user.
    2. The latest ubuntu, version 10.10,
it can be use as a "normal user", with sudo access to the most sensitive operations.

On the CentOS the new serial_tracker dont able to run. I created on a Windows system a Tracker.prefs file with valid user and port information, and I put it in the same directory, where I started the program. It start, but whitout any message stop it.
I checked the used library files in the program (dll-s), and I checked some of it on a real Windows system, and I changed some of it with the "native versions", for example the Advoi32.dll, Comctl32.dll, ole32.dll.

After this it started to send some error messages, I put it here:
    ==============================
    [root@centos5 drive_c]# wine serial_tracker
wine: Call from 0x401deb to unimplemented function SHELL32.DLL.IsUserAnAdmin, aborting

wine: Call from 0x401deb to unimplemented function SHELL32.DLL.IsUserAnAdmin, aborting
    ===============================

It seems me, in this error sequences the problem come up from the SHELL32.DLL, in the IsUserAnAdmin procedure call.
I changed the SHELL32.DLL with a "native" version, but the problem remained. I get the idea, this is because I use the system as a root user, the program start to check the user permission, but has some problem with this procedure.
I logged in this CentOS system as a "normal user", start the program, without any success...

In this point I turned on the fresh ubuntu version.
The serial_tracker, last version, runing on it without any error messages.

The consequences of this small test for me, that my CentOS has a little outdated version of wine, and will be problem to run under it some newly developed windows programs.
On the forums, talking about wine problems, I didnot find to much about this problems, they claim, there are some programs, dont running under wine.
But the newer versions of Windows system appeares another problems, if you want to run old windows programs on it.
I put here two links about this new compatibility issues.
In the first you can get an overview about the tools, offered in the new windows systems (Vista, Win7) if you want to try to run old programs.
The second is an interesting open source development direction, to "port" the wine emulator to the Windowes system.
Why? you can find the answer in the refferend link.

"Why would we want to get Wine running in Windows? Newer versions of Windows fail to support old applications that are still supported by Wine. So Wine for Windows would supply useful backward compatibility for users."

    Dear Janos,

according to Microsoft, the latest Tracker should run on Windows 2000 prof. and Windows Server, but i realized problems on one System with Windows 2000 by calling the Shell32.dll. If you are logged in as user or root doesn't make any difference. The call of the isuseranadmin() function are only part of the logging to get more details in case of errors.

So i made a new Version for Windows 2000 users available, this should run under Wine also.

Please send me a mail if you want to have it.

    Regards

    Edmund

    Hi, Dear Edmund,

From my test I concluded to that the wine on my two system is different:
on my more than 2 years old CentOs its version is 1.0.1
on ubuntu the version is 1.2.2
Hopefully they have some improovement in it. And I think, the running "conditions" basically dependent from the versions of the used dll libraries. Parts of this libraries were/are rewriten for open versions, but some of it use the "native" files. It seems, the version, running on the fress ubuntu have more recent "environment".

Ofcourse If I would get the Windows 2000 version of your program, I will test it on my two desktop systems.

    Hallo!

    Dear Klaus,
I took a look into your log file, it seems me, there are any strong "wideband" noise around you. Because we can see in the log, the toa system receive very much signals (its sure, come not from real lightnings) and your gps near continuously floating to receive signals.
Sometimes happened similar case at my station too.

If you have time and intereseting, I propose to you, download plz. the Spectrumlab from this page,

connect into one of your soundcards input a some meter long wire, and start the program, and try to explore, which kind of noises exits around you.
If you have problems, send here some notes....

(here is the google translate of my sentences):

    Lieber Klaus,

    Dear Edmund,
I tested a little more the serial_tracker, version 5.17 for W2000 on linux, but I dont dump here my notes, because it is not intersting anybody, except myself, and hopefully for you. I made some screenshots of the gps init process, I put one of it on the reffered page too.
I put this notes to the end of my "blog" page, and here is the consequences of it:
    - there are two version of the new (5.17) of the serial_tracker.exe program, one is running well on the new/fressh linux system on wine emulator, whitout any problem.
    - Edmund developed another "clone" of this version, for running on W2000 op system. This version run on both linux, I used for test: on CentOS, and on Ubuntu.

    Hallo,
